Most creators pick a keyword by instinct and find out three months later that either nobody searches for it or a hundred large channels already own it. Keyword Explorer Lite gives you the two numbers that matter before you commit — an estimate of search volume and a competition score — plus the five titles currently ranking, title formulas that work for the term, and ten related keywords gaining momentum.
This guide explains how to read volume against competition, what the ranking titles tell you, and when to upgrade to the Advanced explorer.
Volume versus competition
The opportunity score combines both: a keyword with high volume and low competition is rare and worth a video immediately; high volume with high competition needs a distinctive angle; low volume with low competition is a good Short or a chapter in a broader video. The report states which quadrant your keyword sits in, and the ten related rising keywords usually include one in a better quadrant.
What the top five titles tell you
If all five ranking titles are from channels over 500k subscribers, the term is effectively closed to a small channel. If two or more are from channels under 50k, or are more than 18 months old, it is open. The title formulas extracted from the five are the current convention — use the convention, add your angle.
Lite versus Advanced
Lite answers "should I make this video?". Advanced adds geographic breakdown, seasonality, ten ranking videos with stats, CPM estimate and the best upload time — the data you need when a keyword is worth building a series around or when you are choosing between two niches.
Tips
- Test three variants of the phrase in separate runs; "make money online" and "make money online as a student" can differ by 50 points in competition.
- Use the Search Suggest Scraper first to find candidate phrases, then Lite to score them.
- Record the opportunity score in your content calendar. After twenty videos you will see the score that reliably works for your channel size.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the highest volume — Volume you cannot rank for is zero views.
- Ignoring the age of ranking videos — Old top results are the clearest sign of an open keyword.
- One keyword per video — The related-keywords list gives you secondaries for the description and chapters.
Worked example
Input: "make money online"
What the report returned: Volume: very high. Competition 91/100. Opportunity 22. All top five from 1M+ channels. Rising related: "make money online as a student 2026" (competition 38, opportunity 71). Recommended formula: "[N] ways to [outcome] as a [audience] (no [objection])".
Frequently asked questions
Are the volume numbers exact?
They are estimates in bands, derived from autocomplete depth, result counts and related-query signals. Use them comparatively.
What competition score can a small channel win?
Below 40 is usually reachable for channels under 10k subscribers with a good video; 40–65 needs a strong angle; above 65 is for established channels.
How is this different from the Keyword Difficulty Checker?
Difficulty Checker goes deeper on competition alone — subscriber threshold, time to page 1, easier alternatives. Lite balances volume and competition in one view.
Can I export the related keywords?
Yes, every list section has a copy button.
