YPP eligibility is a milestone with a date, and the date depends on choices you can make now: how often you upload, what length, what mix of long-form and Shorts. The Monetization Timeline Planner estimates days to YPP from your current growth rate, recommends the upload frequency that hits 1k subscribers and 4k hours fastest, projects income at each subscriber milestone, and lays out a diversification strategy so YPP is the first stream and not the only one.

This guide covers the two-threshold problem, why upload frequency is the main lever, and how to plan past YPP.

Two thresholds

YPP needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in twelve months or ten million Shorts views in ninety days. Channels usually hit one threshold well before the other: talking-head channels hit subscribers first, tutorial channels hit hours first. The planner identifies your binding constraint and targets it — more, longer videos for hours; more searchable, shareable videos for subscribers.

Upload frequency as the lever

Watch hours accumulate per video; subscribers accumulate per impression. Both scale with uploads, but with diminishing returns per video beyond a certain cadence and rising quality cost. The recommendation is the cadence that minimises days-to-YPP given your capacity — usually one to two long-form per week plus Shorts for the subscriber side — with the projected date for each cadence so you can see the trade.

Past YPP

AdSense at 1k subscribers is small. The income projection at each milestone shows this honestly and the diversification strategy sequences the other streams: affiliates immediately, a first sponsor pitch at a few thousand, a small product when the audience asks for one. The planner puts dates on each.

Tips

  • Enter subscribers, public watch hours (Studio → Earn tab), and your current cadence.
  • Longer videos help hours only if they are watched; a 15-minute video at 30% retention is 4.5 minutes.
  • Set up affiliate links before YPP; they need no threshold.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing subscribers when hours are the constraint — Or vice versa — check the binding threshold.
  • Padding videos to accumulate hours — Retention drops; hours do not rise.
  • Treating YPP as the goal — It is the first stream, and not the largest.

Worked example

Input: "620 subs; 1,900 watch hours; 1 video every 10 days; home coffee tutorials."

What the report returned: Binding constraint: subscribers (hours on pace for 4k in ~5 months). Days to YPP at current cadence: ~210. At 1/week + 2 Shorts/week: ~130. Income at 1k: $40–$90/mo; 5k: $250–$600; 10k: $600–$1,400. Diversify: affiliate links now; first sponsor pitch at 3k.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get monetised on YouTube?

From a few months to a couple of years depending on niche and cadence. The planner estimates from your actual rate.

Do Shorts count toward watch hours?

No — Shorts views count toward the separate 10M/90-day threshold; long-form watch time counts toward 4,000 hours.

How much will I earn at 1,000 subscribers?

Usually tens of dollars a month from ads; the projection shows your niche's range and how it grows.

Is this different from the YPP Readiness Checker?

Checker tells you if you are eligible now. Planner tells you when you will be and how to get there faster.
