Most tag lists were written in thirty seconds at upload time and never revisited. They contain the topic, four vague single words, two trending terms that have nothing to do with the video, and a misspelling. The Tag Quality Checker scores every tag from 0 to 10 on relevance, search volume and specificity, classifies each as strong, weak or remove, suggests ten replacements, and gives a strategy score with fixes.
This guide explains the three scoring dimensions, why removal matters as much as addition, and how to audit a back catalogue efficiently.
Three dimensions
Relevance: does the tag describe this video, not just your channel? Search volume: does anyone type it? Specificity: is it a phrase someone would search, or a single word that means nothing alone? A tag needs all three to be strong. "coffee" scores high on volume, low on specificity, medium on relevance — weak. "gaggia classic pro dial in" scores high on all three — strong.
Why remove
Irrelevant tags dilute YouTube's understanding of the video and, when they are trending terms unrelated to the content, fall under the misleading-metadata policy. Removing five bad tags often does more than adding five good ones. The "remove" classification is the report's most valuable column.
Auditing the back catalogue
Start with the ten videos that get the most search traffic in Studio; tag fixes there have immediate effect. Paste each video's tags, apply the replacements, move on. Ten videos take under an hour.
Tips
- Paste the video title along with the tags so relevance is scored against the actual topic.
- Keep the total under 500 characters; the report shows the count after replacements.
- Put the strongest tag first — YouTube weights early tags slightly more.
Common mistakes
- Single-word tags — They are almost always weak. Phrases win.
- Trending-but-irrelevant tags — Policy risk plus classification damage.
- Copying tags between videos — Half will be irrelevant to the new video.
Worked example
Input: 18 tags from a grinder-review video.
What the report returned: Strong 6, weak 7, remove 5 (incl. "viral", "trending 2026", "coffee"). Strategy score 41 → 83 after applying 10 replacements such as "budget espresso grinder under 200" and "hand grinder vs electric espresso". Total 412 characters.
Frequently asked questions
Do tags still matter?
Marginally for ranking, more for classification and catching alternate phrasings. Bad tags hurt more than good tags help, which is why auditing matters.
Can it read tags from a video URL?
Paste the tag list from Studio for your own videos. For competitor videos, the Tag Gap Finder compares against them.
How many tags should I keep?
15–25, under 500 characters.
What is a good strategy score?
Above 75. Below 50 means the tag set is actively confusing classification.
